New Album from Low Society

Here's the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed "You Can't Keep A Good Woman Down", the THIRD studio album from international Roots Bluesand Americana powerhouse Low Society, SANCTIFIED. Recorded in Belgium and Memphis beginning in October of 2016.

Lead vocalist and native Texan Mandy Lemons & her partner in crime,guitarist/producer Sturgis Nikides, are joined by the phenomenal Belgian rhythm section of bassist Jacky Verstraeten and drummer Bart De Brueker. Special guests include the return of Lucero's Rick Steff on piano, organ & accordion, Mr. Brian Hawkins on the jaw harp, along with album engineer Will Danger and Andrew McCarthy joining in on percussion on select tracks. Rhythm tracking took place at Closed Session Recording Studio in Roeselare Belgium, with owner Kristof Maes engineering.

All additional recording and mixing was finished at Memphis's historic landmark, American Recording Studio, with Will Danger behind the console. The completed album was mastered by Gebre Waddell at Stonebridge Mastering, in Memphis.Low Society is the brainchild of blues belter Mandy Lemons, winner of the 2015 Emissaries of Memphis Music Peoples Choice Award, and slide guitar phenom Sturgis Nikides, who recorded and toured with the legendary Rock & Roll Hall OfFamer, John Cale (of The Velvet Underground).

Their first two albums have garnered critical acclaim and extensive worldwide airplay, including the enthusiastic support of B.B. Kings Bluesville on Sirius XM Radio. The pair has toured non-stop since 2008, literally playing hundreds of shows on festival, juke joint and club stages across the US and Europe. They have appeared at Clarksdale Mississippi's Juke Joint Festival 5 times and NYC's Howl Festival for 3 consecutive years. After relocating from NYC to Memphis TN in 2012 they began appearing regularly on Beale Street.

Hi-Z vs. Lo-Z – Impedance, DI Boxes, Preamps, and Mic Level v. Line Level

What is Hi-Z vs. Lo-Z?  What do people mean when they talk about “Mic Level”, “Line Level”, and “Impedance”? First, let’s look at Mic Level sources.  These are considered to be either at Hi-Z or Lo-Z : Hi-Z – High Impedance, High Voltage, Low Current Keywords : Guitars, Basses, Instruments; Short Cable Runs, Better Sustain, More Interference. Marshall 1960A 4x12 Guitar Cab Mic Placement / Positioning

How should you mic up your 1960A rig at your next show or recording project? The short answer: Experiment with many different mics, mic positions, and even mic preamps before settling on a "best" sound.  There is really no "right" answer since music is so subjective, and there may be multiple solutions for different situations.  Make sure you know what speaker sounds best in your cab, and make sure you know where an SM57 sounds best, too, since that's what the average sound tech is going to throw on there. Fostex 3070 Compressor/Limiter Review

One of my close buddies picked up a Fostex 3070 Compressor/Limiter today for $50.00 off of a Craigslist deal and promptly handed it over to me for inspection and testing.  To be honest, my experience with analog compressors is fairly limited; I have used EL Distressors in the past but beyond that, my knowledge is quite limited.  I know what "should" work in theory and what settings might be good for certain genres of music, but I really had no idea what to expect here. After a cursory inspection of the unit, which revealed it was manufactured in 1982, I read the manual ( available online here ) cover to cover.  I realized a few things right off the bat -- this is a VCA stereo compressor, it comes with an included noise gate, and side-chaining is completely possible.  The rest of the manual is surprisingly helpful... there's really no fluff here like with most modern manuals that are filled with useless garbage.
