Summer NAMM 2014 - Show Schedule and Insights

Summer NAMM 2014 is just around the corner, and if it's anything like last year, it is sure to be plenty of fun for exhibitors and attendees alike.  With fantastic nightlife and a city that appreciates music and industry like no other, it is a special event to take part in. With my upcoming move to Austin, Texas in just a few short weeks, I am unfortunately unable to attend the event this summer.  However, I send my good friends Anthony and Kimberly off with many congratulations, as their San Diego Music Studio has been named as a NAMM Top 100 Dealer again this year.  Congratulations, you guys! Music Industry Day 2014 Expanded summer show rocks with Vince Gill performing at “Insight” and live music from dozens of performers including TV star Jonathan Jackson and country music’s Greg Bates. Carlsbad, CA — Come for the trade show; stay for the fun. Summer NAMM packs three days and nights of can’t-miss events, live music, and networking opportunities into the...

Weight of the Sun's new hard rock album: COMMONS

Weight of the Sun - Commons (2014) The making of this album is truly a long story, and I'll do my best to give you my perspective in a concise format.  It goes all the way back a full seven years to when Rob Jones, the bass player, originally started a version of the band with some other guys.  Over the course of time, several members came and left, the music evolved, and even the name changed.  Now we are known as Weight of the Sun , but the band was previously called Chanauk up until early 2014, when we all decided it would be in our best interest to change the name to something a little easier to remember, pronounce correctly, spell correctly, and find online. From L to R: Rob Jones, Pete Casellini, David Martin, Ruben Gutierrez, Steven Fies. In fact, to go on a brief tangent, the name Weight of the Sun resulted from a tedious process during which at least 40-50 names were thrown out for consideration.  The band shared a Google spreadsheet online an...

Album Review: Language and Perspective by Bad Suns

Bad Suns Upon first listen, Language and Perspective, the debut album from Los Angeles-based rockers Bad Suns, provides a laser-focused, glossy sound that aligns closely with what’s on the radio today. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This uniform album may help them push through their explosive rise and create real staying power for years to come. While the single “Cardiac Arrest” has received a lot of attention for its sweet melody and catchy chorus, it’s relatively thin compared to some of the more complex sounds on the rest of the album. The band delivers 11 songs that are homogenous enough to offer a clear direction while still touching on their potential to take risks. “Take My Love” showcases the band’s ability to create dance-friendly tunes with its interesting syncopations. Tracks like “Matthew James” and “We Move Like the Ocean” highlight the latent anthemic nature of the band. The songs have a distinct southern California feel, with their breezy guitars and...
