Rock Goddess of the Month - Maria Brink of In This Moment
We’re back here again for the month of April crowning another female rocker as the Rock Goddess of the Month. Our Rock Goddesses are the epitome of the Rock and Metal genre. They earn the spot through hard work, perseverance and endless talents. This month’s Rock Goddess fits the mold of rock royalty without any doubt. Her scream will send chills down your spine and her vocals are dark, dense and close to perfection. Here is our monthly tribute to the Rock Goddess of the Month. She is the lead singer and co-founder of the band In This Moment, Maria Brink.
This alternative metal band has risen to the mainstream music waves with their latest album Blood, hitting the 15th spot on the Billboard charts. Released in August 2012, Blood is their darkest album yet. It combines heavy riffs, dark concepts and an injection of sexual aggression. Maria pulled out all of the stops when it came to creating this album showing her vocal range throughout each track. Their single “Blood” peaked at number 9 on the Active Rock and Mainstream Rock billboard and shows a new side of Maria that her fans have yet to see. The music video for “Blood” was a huge success which currently has over 6 million views!
In This Moment has done nonstop touring to support their latest album sharing the stage with Godsmack, Shinedown and Staind in the Uproar Festival. They also performed in the Rock on the Range Festival with Slash, Five Finger Death Punch and Lacuna Coil, and was a supporting act to Halestorm. Maria Brink’s stage presence is like no other. She sings and screams with a dark passion and puts on one heart-pounding show using special effects, fog machines and jaw dropping costumes. Maria oozes sex appeal and backs it all up with endless vocal and lyrical talent.
So what’s Maria Brink and the guys of In This Moment up to now? They are currently melting faces and head banging in the Road to the Golden Gods Tour with Stone Sour and Hell or High Water. They will be attending the Golden God Awards where they are nominated for Best Vocalist and Song of the Year for their single “Blood.” Then onto the Carolina Rebellion on May 4th sharing the stage with Deftones, Papa Roach and many others. Also, it was recently announced that the band will be shooting their very first live concert DVD in Madison, Wisconsin where fans will be incorporated in the recording on May 21st. Soon after, they’ll be attending the 2013 Rock on the Range in Columbus, Ohio on May 19th sharing the stage with Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Volbeat. In June, they will be a part of the Download festival with other bands like Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Bullet for My Valentine and a headlining tour is under the works. It’s safe to say In This Moment is going to have one hell of a year. Maria Brink, this moment is for you! Our Rock Goddess of the Month.
To end off the tribute to the lovely Maria Brink, here is the newly released music video of “Adrenalize.” Let the mosh pits commence!
What is Hi-Z vs. Lo-Z? What do people mean when they talk about “Mic Level”, “Line Level”, and “Impedance”? First, let’s look at Mic Level sources. These are considered to be either at Hi-Z or Lo-Z : Hi-Z – High Impedance, High Voltage, Low Current Keywords : Guitars, Basses, Instruments; Short Cable Runs, Better Sustain, More Interference. Most of us will come to associate Hi-Z impedance equipment with things like guitars, basses, and 1/4” connector plugs. Inside of a Hi-Z cable, there are only two conductors: a “positive” and a ground. Since there is no negative cable (such as in a Lo-Z cable) to balance the positive cable, both capacitance and reactance suffer with increasingly longer cables. In layman’s terms, this means your sound loses quality and gets noisier once your cable exceeds roughly 15’ – 20’. (Ever wonder why it’s hard to find guitar cables longer than 20’? Now you know why!) Fun Fact : Vacuum tube circuits have na...
How should you mic up your 1960A rig at your next show or recording project? The short answer: Experiment with many different mics, mic positions, and even mic preamps before settling on a "best" sound. There is really no "right" answer since music is so subjective, and there may be multiple solutions for different situations. Make sure you know what speaker sounds best in your cab, and make sure you know where an SM57 sounds best, too, since that's what the average sound tech is going to throw on there. The long answer: Most of us know that placing mics in various positions around a speaker cabinet will yield different sounds. Part of this has to do with each speaker sounding a little different (even if they're the same make and model), mic height from the ground producing various colorations due to differences in reflection time, and what kind of room you are in. In particular, though, there are three (3) main placement factors that will affect ...
One of my close buddies picked up a Fostex 3070 Compressor/Limiter today for $50.00 off of a Craigslist deal and promptly handed it over to me for inspection and testing. To be honest, my experience with analog compressors is fairly limited; I have used EL Distressors in the past but beyond that, my knowledge is quite limited. I know what "should" work in theory and what settings might be good for certain genres of music, but I really had no idea what to expect here. After a cursory inspection of the unit, which revealed it was manufactured in 1982, I read the manual ( available online here ) cover to cover. I realized a few things right off the bat -- this is a VCA stereo compressor, it comes with an included noise gate, and side-chaining is completely possible. The rest of the manual is surprisingly helpful... there's really no fluff here like with most modern manuals that are filled with useless garbage. The next step was to grab a few TRS patch cables a...
